The Great Birth Rebellion by Dr Melanie Jackson (PhD)
There is a quiet revolution happening in birth education, and it’s being led through headphones.
The Great Birth Rebellion is, in my view, the gold standard resource for families who want evidence-based clarity without sugar-coating or fear. Hosted by Australian academic midwife Dr Melanie Jackson, the podcast dives deep into research around induction, VBAC, caesarean rates, continuous monitoring, epidurals, homebirth, waterbirth, Group B Strep, gestational diabetes and physiological birth.
The podcast does something rare. It separates evidence from opinion, and then it separates evidence from policy.
That distinction matters enormously.
Evidence is what the research shows when outcomes are examined carefully, including large datasets, systematic reviews, and long-term maternal and neonatal health markers. Policy, on the other hand, is what institutions decide to implement. Policy is shaped not only by evidence, but by litigation risk, staffing models, insurance frameworks, budget constraints and cultural norms inside hospitals.
Those are not the same thing.
For example, evidence may show that continuity of support through pregnancy, labour and postpartum with a known midwife reduces caesarean rates, birth trauma and improves maternal satisfaction. Yet a hospital model may not fund or offer one-to-one midwifery care. Evidence may support VBAC under certain conditions, yet hospital policy may place restrictions that are more conservative than the data requires.
Understanding this gap is not about blaming care providers. Most clinicians are working within the framework they are employed in. But if families assume “this is hospital policy, therefore it must be the strongest evidence,” they miss the complexity.
The Great Birth Rebellion walks listeners through that complexity calmly and rigorously. Episodes cite studies, unpack relative risk versus absolute risk, explain how to read statistics and model critical thinking.
Birth is not just a medical event. It is a physiological process occurring within a system. If you want to navigate that system intelligently, you need to understand the evidence and where it stops.
That is not rebellion. That is informed decision-making.
